CEED Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory

Under the direction of Dr. Galit Sharon, the Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory鈥檚 mission is to support aquaculture and associated aquatic animal industries by providing diagnostic services to the aquaculture industry, extension agents and regulators both in Rhode Island and other northeastern states.

The Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) focuses on diseases of aquatic animals, including shellfish and finfish, with a specialized emphasis on diseases of bivalve mollusks. The laboratory integrates traditional pathological diagnostic methods with cutting-edge molecular techniques to support accurate disease detection and research innovation. The ADL also conducts externally funded research in aquatic animal health and plays a key role in training 欧美AV marine biology students.

The Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) Team

Founded in 2009 by Dr. Roxanna Smolowitz, with the support of Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, the laboratory continues to advance aquatic animal health research and education. The laboratory is currently directed by Dr. Galit Sharon, DVM, PhD, and supported by laboratory managers Abigail Scro, McS, Michael Torselli, MSc and Jess Peluso, MSc.

Throughout the academic year and summertime students at 欧美AV in the ADL actively participate in grant funded and independent research projects along with assisting in disease diagnostic procedures. Many students start in the lab as freshman or sophomores, as either work study (paid) students or volunteers, and by their Junior or Senior year they take on research projects which often become senior thesis or credit-based research projects. Students gain hands-on experience in aquatic animal health diagnostics and care using the latest available technologies.
